8 Apps You Need in 2018

What do you want for yourself in 2018?

For me, 2018 is all about internal focus and commitment to self development; it’s about becoming the person I need to be to live the life I want. As most of us are always on the move or always on our phones, I thought it would be fun to write about how we can go about improving our lives using our phones, whether we’re on our way to work or curled up on the sofa.

TBH I completely fell of last year, forgetting the importance of self care and continuous improvement, but I’m happy to be back on track! I want to share 8 apps that I use to help with focus, productivity and cultivating knowledge, which I believe contribute to self development.

So here they are, in no particular order:

1. Headspace: brilliant things happen in calm minds
 In any situation (but especially when you need help/need to sort your life out)
Improves: Clarity, Focus

Headspace is one of my favourite apps. It’s a platform that provides meditation and mindfulness training to help with different emotions and situations. Whether you have anxiety, depression or are just burned out and tired, Headspace guides you through different exercises to manage your thoughts and feel better inside. 10 free sessions.

2. Habitify: motivational habit tracker
 When forming new habits
Improves: Commitment, Discipline

As Jim Rohn (entrepreneur and motivational speaker) once said: Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going. Habitify is a new one to my collection as I recently introduced activities like reading, yoga and meditation to my mornings. In the past I had a tendency to start new things and give up soon after. This app lets me tick off tasks and shows me a completion rate with streaks, which makes the habit-forming easier.


3. Ted: learn from the world’s most remarkable people
Understanding ourselves and others & learning new things
Perspective, Awareness

Everyone’s heard of Ted talks. But I don’t know if everyone knows about this free Ted app. It contains thousands of talks on interesting subjects (also works on Chromecast and you get it on Amazon Firesticks). Below is a screenshot of one of my fav talks – there’s so many talk topics like psychology, influence, body language, how to spot a liar, relationships and presentations that can change your life and mindset; I highly recommend this one.


4. Wunderlist
To create well organised lists 
Time Management, Organisation

My go to list app! It does everything from sub-lists to calendar integrations and even has hashtags to group and search tasks e.g. #admin or #groceries. I use it for event management, work and personal to-dos and also shopping or movies to watch lists. This app helped me get way more organised at my job and manage my time better so if you need to get your life in order, try it out!


5. Audible: stories that speak to you

For: People who don’t have time to read books & auditory learners

I swore by Audible in 2017 as I didn’t have make time to read books. As you may have noticed above, that’s a habit I’m trying to change for this year. But for those of you that genuinely don’t have the time or simply can’t be bothered, Audible is just as effective! You can listen to your book in the mornings getting ready, on your commute, at the gym or in bed. Subscription members get 1 free book a month.


6. Blinkist
Key points from self improvement books
Intellect, Wisdom

Blinkist puts the key lessons and ideas from best-selling books into small packs you can read or listen to in less than 15 minutes. You can get free access to 1 book a day. Pretty straightforward – this one’s good for short commutes and early morning or bed time reads. If you don’t want to read or listen to a whole book, but still want to consume the information this is the app for you.


7. Coursera: learn a new skill in 4-6 weeks
To to gain knowledge or learn skills you lack
Improves: Proficiency, Your CV

This app gives you access to loads of free courses and is great if you need to learn a new skill. It offers video content, backed by well-known universities, and also has  optional certifications or specialisations. Check out the desktop site on my free courses page.

8. Forest: stay away from your smartphone
Use: To help with procrastination

Ok this one is for my fellow procrastinators! FYI this one is my wild card – you will either love it or hate it. You basically plant a tree then set the timer from 10 to 120 minutes and if you leave the screen to go on your phone, the tree dies. Weird but it really works for me. Try it out and see if it works for you!

My best week: pure focus and non procrastination for a total of 20 hours and 15 minutes
